How to setup MX Records in your Namecheap account

Learn how to set up MX records in your Namecheap account settings with this informative article.

If your domain is directed to our BasicDNS, PremiumDNS, or FreeDNS, you can easily set up mail service and configure MX records in your Namecheap account.

NOTE: Before setting up the mail service, ensure that no CNAME record has been created for the bare domain (e.g., yourdomain.tld) in the Host records section. This is crucial as CNAME takes precedence over all other records, including the MX Records responsible for mail delivery.

To configure MX records for your domain, you can easily follow these simple steps:

  1. Log in to your Namecheap account by clicking on the "Sign In" button located in the top left corner of the page.

  2. On the left sidebar, click on "Domain List" to access your domain

  1. Click on the "Manage" button next to the domain name for which you want to configure DNS records.

  1. Go to the "Advanced DNS" tab and locate the "Mail Settings" section.

NOTE: that you may not be able to edit the Host Records in this section.

You have the option to select one of the following Mail Settings based on your desired mail service:

  • No Email Service: Choose this if you do not want to use any mail service. This means your domain will not have any MX records.

  • Email Forwarding: Select this option if you want to create personalized email addresses for your domain and forward incoming emails to other email accounts of your choice. After choosing this option, the MX records will be set up automatically.

  • The MXE record is utilized to forward mail to the IP address of a mail server.

  • Custom MX is used to configure MX records for third-party mail services such as cPanel webmail service (if you want to use cPanel mail service with default nameservers), Zoho Mail, Outlook.com, and more.

You have the option to specify your own domain as the mail server address, such as mail.domain.tld or domain.tld.

NOTE: that you have created the corresponding A record in the DNS settings, which points to the IP address of the mail server.
  • Private Email - if you want to configure MX records for Namecheap's Private Email service. By selecting this option, the MX records will be automatically set up for you.

  • Gmail - if you have a G Suite subscription, choose the Gmail option to automatically configure the necessary records for this email service.

After selecting all the required settings, make sure to save your changes. Typically, it may take around 30 minutes for the newly created records to become active and take effect.
